How to cancel Microsoft 365

Last reviewed About 2–5 minutes

Microsoft 365 subscriptions are managed through your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com. After canceling, your access to Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and OneDrive storage continues through the end of your paid period. Once the subscription ends, apps enter a reduced-functionality mode and OneDrive storage is reduced to the free tier allocation.

If you subscribed through an app store or a third-party retailer, cancellation may need to go through that channel.

Steps

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account

Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in with the Microsoft account that holds your Microsoft 365 subscription.

  2. Navigate to Services & Subscriptions

Click on 'Services & subscriptions' in the top navigation to see your active subscriptions.

  3. Find Microsoft 365

Locate your Microsoft 365 (Personal or Family) subscription in the list.

  4. Select Cancel

Click 'Cancel' or 'Manage' next to the Microsoft 365 subscription and follow the prompts to cancel.

  5. Confirm cancellation

Confirm the cancellation. Microsoft will show your access end date. A confirmation email will be sent to your account.

Things to know

  • After cancellation, Microsoft 365 apps go into reduced-functionality (view-only) mode — you can read but not create or edit documents.
  • OneDrive storage reverts to the free tier (typically 5 GB); files exceeding that limit become read-only and eventually inaccessible if not moved.
  • Microsoft 365 Family plan subscribers: only the account owner can cancel; canceling affects all family members.
  • If you subscribed through Apple, cancel via Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions.
